Thai Protest Not Stopping Festival

The Thai protest is not stopping foreigners coming to Thailand for the Songkran Festival. The Songkran Festival appears on April 13th, 14th and 15th.

The Songkran Festival celebrates the Thai New Year as well as the start of the rainy season. Thais celebrate by throwing water at each other.

Six Thai major airports are expecting about 1.9 million people between the 11th and 18th of April 2014. This is an increase of 4.2% from 2013’s Songkran festival. Six Thai airports are Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai. This surge may have come because the Thai government had lifted the state of emergency that had been in place for two months. The opposition said they would stop their Thai protest for Songkran.

Foreigners that come for Songkran should be prepared to get wet. The Thais use buckets, hoses, water guns and super soakers to get people wet. It is like a water war and foreigners should be ready for it. When the foreigners go out, they should put anything that they are worried about getting wet in plastic bags. Any mobile phones that they carry should definitely be placed in plastic bags. Foreigners can get their phone repaired, but it is not a good way to spend the holiday.

Other than throwing water at each other, Thais go to temples to give food to the monks and throw water at the temple statues. Thais can also throw water at statues at the local malls and shops. Thais are Buddhists and this is the way that sthey earn merit in their religion.

In Thai homes, the young people gently put scented water on their parents and elders as a sign of respect. The elders are then supposed to bless the young people.

During Songkran, the Thais are supposed to buy birds and fish in the markets and then release them. They used to collect fish in dried pools and then release them. There would be no time for a Thai protest.

For Thais, Songkran is a way to make a new start. Thais should also think about the past s how people have treated them in the past. If Thais have been mistreated by somebody, they forgive them. Thais should just think about the people who have treated them well.

Songkran is a time when Thais go visit their families. This usually means that Thais leave Bangkok and go back to the villages and towns that they came from. Even though Bangkok is a population o f 10 million, the city actually feels kind of empty during Songkran. The traffic is better and a person can travel quicker around the city. It is a great time for the foreigners to come to Bangkok.

In the village and town, they gently throw water at each other unlike in the cities. One Songgkran day, all the youth put on Thai costumes and participate in a parade. Another Songkran day, the village has Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) matches. The participates in the matches are as young as three years. As long as a Thai can walk, a Thai can be part of a Muay Thai match.

The Thai protest is not stopping Thais and foreigners from participating in Songkran festival events. Songkran is very important for Thais and they never would stop it for anything.
